Winter Skin Care Tips

Dry, Chapped, Dull, Cracked, Ashy...Winter Skin, Oh My! Don’t let winter skin get you chapped! We’ve compiled a list of simple tips to help keep your skin healthy, soft and glowing all winter long.

TURN DOWN THE HEAT:  Harsh winter elements can be brutally drying to your skin, especially if you spend time outdoors on a daily basis. Yes, I know it’s tempting to spend long moments in a hot steamy shower on cold winter mornings; but you’re doing a disservice to your skin because hot showers actually dry it out even more. Try keeping your showers warmer (as opposed to hotter) because hot water strips your skin of its natural oils called sebum, removing this happy protective barrier that is so important to the health of your skin!  And remember shorter showers and lower temperatures also save water and power, which save you on your water and energy bill. Making Happier Skin and a Happier Pocketbook!

DRINK WATER:  While you might not feel overly thirsty during cold winter days, the truth is your skin needs water now more than ever.  Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin supple, glowing and less prone to chapping.  Ice cold water tends to have a negative impact on digestion, so try drinking water at room temperature or even a little warm.  But most importantly, drink plenty of it - at least six to eight (8 ounce) glasses per day.  The good news is that come spring time, you'll be hard pressed to kick the habit!

MOISTURIZE: Immediately after each shower or bath gently massage a skin loving natural Shea butter, Cocoa butter or natural cream into your skin to keep it healthy, supple and to tone the underlying muscles. You’ll be thrilled with the results in just one week. Also, butters and creams infused with herbs like Hemp, Tea Tree and Mint, or soothing Lavender have many other emotional and physical rejuvenating properties.

EXFOLIATE:  Exfoliating the skin might not come to mind when it comes to protection...but if you want to keep your skin looking youthful and soft, it's important to exfoliate away those dead skin cells. Commercially prepared exfoliating scrubs often contain harsh chemical ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate, a foaming agent that can cause further dryness and mild skin inflammation.  When shopping for a scrub look for gentle, non-abrasive and chemical free sugar scrubs. Sugar granules in comparison to salt crystals are smooth and non-abrasive, and sugar is alpha-hydroxy rich to give you glowing skin and perfect to use even after shaving, with no burn.

What you give attention to grows...

What you give attention to grows ~ plain and simple. Instead of giving attention to what you don’t have or the negative things…cultivate, be thankful and focus on what you do have. Every seed you plant and nurture will reap a harvest in due time.

Simplifying My Life

Written by Wally Amos

I am going through the process of cleaning out a bunch of stuff at my house.  I look forward to being free of all these possessions that I no longer need or have room to keep.  And in the big picture, I recognize that simplifying my life is nearly always a positive experience.  So, I am forging ahead with a pickup truck, a couple of strong friends and the map to the city dump.

In my days as a talent agent, I got to know a lot of performers.  Tina Turner is a powerful force not only in music but also in life.  She and I have shared some similar experiences; she also had to go to court to fight for the right to retain her own name in business.  Tina has a wonderful way to explain how she got through that time:

“Sometimes you’ve got to let everything go – purge yourself.  If you are unhappy with anything . . . whatever is bringing you down,  GET RID OF IT.  Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.

Sometimes we not only need to rid ourselves of our junk, we need to say goodbye to the old stuff and celebrate simplifying our lives – looking forward to whatever adventure lies ahead that will fill the empty space.
American philosopher and teacher Joseph Campbell may have said it best:  “We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.  The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come.”

Do you sometimes have a difficult time letting go of old stuff that has piled up?  Do you know down deep inside that you’re never really going to fix that old appliance?  Glue together that sugar bowl?  Re-use that Styrofoam packing material?

            Onward.

Three Letter Words

Written by Wally Amos

There is one three letter word that I refuse to use.  That word is “try.”  If I had my way, it would be removed from the English language.

When we use the word “try,” even in our heads, we’re giving ourselves unconscious permission to fail.  Leaving the door open for failure means we don’t have to take responsibility for that failure.  After all, we tried, right?  Wasn’t that enough?  Beyond childhood we no longer get bonus points for “trying.”
So stop trying and start doing.  Stop saying, “I will try,” and start saying, “I will do.”  But the job doesn’t stop there, because once you have set your mind to do a thing you have to take responsibility for it.  Once you have done this, you will be surprised at how easy it is to accomplish something that you thought was impossible.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you will never fail.  Failure is something that comes with the territory.  But don’t give yourself permission to fail before you even start.  Give yourself permission to succeed, and you will succeed.  Maybe not the first time.  Maybe not even the second time.  But each crisis you get through makes you stronger.  With each mistake, you learn something that will prevent you from making that mistake again.  The secret is to not give up.  Just keep moving forward.  Keep “doing” and one day you will discover that what once seemed impossible has now been accomplished.

All day long, every day, we are presented with choices. We can HELP life happen or we can HOPE life will happen.  It’s up to you.  To HELP is to be proactive.

Are you a can-do person?  Have you ever surprised yourself by doing something you didn’t think you could do?

  3. Loop the end of the "tail" and tie a tight knot to create a "handle" of about 4 inches in diameter and leaving about 12 inches of rope between the tennis ball and the knot of the handle.

TENNIS BALL TUG TOY
  1. Drill a hole through a tennis ball.
  2. Thread a rope at least 12 inches long through the ball. Tie the ends of the rope into a sturdy knot.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
  • Be sure the toy you're making is durable enough to stand up to your dog's chewing strength and level of play.
  • Be sure any squeakers you add to the toy are safely concealed.
  • Avoid squeakers and stuffing altogether if your dog likes to rip apart his toys.
  • Steer clear of using any choking hazards in your toys, such as string, ribbons or buttons.
  • Always supervise your dog with the toy to make sure he will not destroy it.
  • Be watchful for any torn, shredded or broken parts and remove the toy immediately if there are any.

8 Great Tips To Boost Your Energy

Tired of being tired? “I want my energy back!”  Whether you’re moving in slow motion or exhausted from juggling work, family, and friends…and with all the life changes your fatigue and crankiness meter is bound to go up at some point.

Feeling tired not only robs you of productivity and pleasure, it also can make you a real you know what! Studies show that women seem more likely than men to crash & get cranky - that women actually sleep less, stress more, & do more multitasking than men (surprise, surprise).

Want to fight the fatigue? Well we have a few tips to put a little pep back in your step!

  1. Exercise – WebMD says even a brisk 10-minute walk not only increased energy, but the effects lasted up to two hours. And when the daily 10-minute walks continued for three weeks, overall energy levels & reduces stress.  It also gives your cells more energy to burn and circulates oxygen. And exercising causes your body to release stress hormones that in modest amounts can make you feel energized.
  1. Take a Power Nap - a 30- 60-minute "power nap" can not only reverse the effects of information overload, it may also help us to better retain what we have learned.
  1. Control StReSs - Stress-induced emotions consume huge amounts of energy. Talking with a friend or relative, joining a support group, or seeing a psychotherapist can all help diffuse stress. Relaxation therapies like meditation, self-hypnosis, yoga, and tai chi are also effective tools for reducing stress.
  1. Lighten Your Load - One of the main reasons for fatigue is overwork. Overwork can include professional, family, and social obligations. Try to streamline your list of “must-do” activities. Set your priorities in terms of the most important tasks. Pare down those that are less important. Consider asking for extra help at work, if necessary.
  1. Don't Skip Breakfast - or Any Other Meal - Studies show that folks who eat breakfast report being in a better mood, and have more energy throughout the day.  Studies published in the journal Nutritional Health found that missing any meal during the day led to an overall greater feeling of fatigue by day's end.
  1. Drink More Water & Less Alcohol - Try cutting down on the amount of alcohol consumed in the evening, alcohol may help you fall asleep, but it interferes with deep sleep, so you're not getting the rest you think you are -- even if you sleep a full eight hours.  Sometimes, even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and lethargic.  So drink water! There's always going to be some debate about how much water you should drink daily. No matter if you decide on 4 vs. 8 glasses, just DRINK UP! You will feel more alert, which means you will LOOK more alert.
  1. Avoid Smoking – Did not know that smoking actually siphons off your energy by causing insomnia. The nicotine in tobacco is a stimulant, so it speeds the heart rate, raises blood pressure, and stimulates brain - wave activity associated with wakefulness, making it harder to fall asleep. Once you do fall asleep, its addictive power can kick in and awaken you with cravings
  1. Instant Energy Boost - Eat an apple, pear, or orange. These fruits (as well as veggies like beans or peas) are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. And they give you a dose of fiber, which keeps you regular and at a healthy, and a lot less taxing to your body.
Try arming yourself with these simple strategies for instant energy. In no time flat, you’ll be catching your second wind — and then some.

Bacon Puffs Recipe

In Memory of Joshua Welsh
By: Joshua Welsh

1 lb. Bacon, cut up into small pieces, fried and drained... I recommend saving the bacon fat for future use.
1 Brick Cream Cheese, so far you have to admit this is a perfect start.
1 Bunch Green Onions, cut into 1/8 inch pieces
1 Tbsp. Spicy mustard, you have to have the mustard, I don't even like mustard but it tastes so yummy in there.
1 Tbsp. Worchtishire (spelling?) sauce
1 large can smack crescent rolls, you know the kind you used to have to smack on the counter to open. They tell you to use a spoon now, but I know you’re like me and will take any opportunity to smack something... especially if it can't smack back.

In medium bowl soften cream cheese in microwave for about 30-40 seconds.

Add mustard, green onions, worchtishire and bacon and stir till blended. At this point you will have to start eating the bacon cream cheese mixture...Don't panic there is always about 3/4 of a cup that doesn't fit into the puffs, that part is meant just for snacking on now.

Cut crescent rolls into small triangles... though not so small you can't fill and fold them but small enough to look dainty... these are finger foods and not everyone has the hands of an East German Plowman.

Put a dollop of cream cheese mixture in the middle of each crescent piece and fold to cover cream cheese. Don't worry if it doesn't look pretty at this point the crescent rolls expand and cover any imperfections... and besides anyone who knows food knows nothing with bacon and cream cheese can be bad.

Bake in a 350 degree oven till golden brown, about 8 -10 minutes.

Serve warm, makes about 16-20 puffs which can feed about 5-6 people, or if you’re like me the recipe feeds 1 person for the duration of a whole movie while curled up on the sofa on a Saturday night.

Simple Nail Care Tips

Create Happy Healthy Nails right from Your Kitchen! You can naturally and inexpensively brighten your nails with just a lemon wedge! By scrubbing your nails daily with lemon it will rid your nails of stains and even brighten them.  You can also gently buff the nails with the rind for a natural shine.  Follow by massaging the nails, cuticles and hands with olive oil.

Yogurt Face Mask & Cleanser

Yogurt is one of the most beneficial skin care ingredients!  Lactic acid and enzymes in yogurt help hydrate and soothe skin; leaving it much more soft and smooth. The same cleansing properties that make it helpful for digestion actually purify the skin as well, both when applied directly to the skin and when consumed. It’s also a great sunburn remedy, soothing the pain and improving redness. When applied to the scalp it can relieve itchiness and decrease dandruff.  Combine yogurt with honey and lemon juice; making a moisturizing and exfoliating mask, for softening the face and neck and minimizing discoloration. You will love how silky your skin feels after using a yogurt mask and cleanser. You can even use this several times a day. Be sure to store it in the refrigerator.

1 tbsp. - Plain Greek Yogurt
1 tsp. - Raw Honey

Mix together and apply to the face. Let mask set for about 10-15 minutes, and then rise off with warm water.

10 Important Food Facts

“The food we eat is like fuel. It gives our bodies the energy they need to function well. If you don’t make sure that the fuel you pump into your body is of the right quality or quantity, you just won’t feel as healthy as you could. We all have up to 100 trillion cells in our bodies, each one demanding a constant supply of daily nutrients in order to function optimally. Food affects all of those cells, and by extension every aspect of our being: mood, energy levels, food cravings, thinking capacity, sex drive, sleeping habits and general health. In short, Healthy Eating is the key to Well Being.” ~ Dr. Gillian McKeith

10 IMPORTANT FOOD FACTS:

FACT #1 A diet high in fat (particularly saturated fats) and high in salt is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.

FACT #2 It is estimated that, on average, 1/3 of cancers could be prevented by changes in diet. A diet high in fiber and whole grain cereal and low in fat has the potential to prevent a number of cancers, including colon, stomach and breast cancer.

FACT #3 Many fertility experts believe that an unhealthy diet, high in fat, sugar, and processed foods and low in nutrients essential to fertility, can lead to infertility and increase chances of miscarriage.

FACT #4 A diet high in fat, sugar and salt leads to weight gain and increases the risk of obesity. Carrying excess weight doesn’t just increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and infertility; it is also associated with fatigue, low self-esteem and poor mental and physical performance.

FACT #5 An unhealthy diet increases the risk of depression and mood swings. It’s also linked to PMS, food cravings and anxiety.

FACT #6 A diet high in additives, preservatives and refined sugar can cause poor concentration, hyperactivity and aggression. This is because foods high in sugar and additives lack chromium, which is removed in the refining process. Chromium is needed for controlling blood sugar levels; when these levels are out of control it can trigger these behavior problems.

FACT #7 A diet that is low in essential nutrient calcium (needed to keep your bones strong) increases the risk of bones becoming weak or brittle – a condition known as osteoporosis.

FACT #8 A diet low in nutrients puts enormous strain on the liver. The liver is essential for the proper digestion and absorption of life-sustaining vitamins and minerals. For optimum health you need your liver to be in peak condition. The liver cannot cope with large amounts of saturated fat and alcohol and this can lead to liver and kidney problems, such as kidney disease and cirrhosis (a life-threatening condition where the cells of the liver die).

FACT #9 A diet too high in sugar can lead to too much glucose (a form of sugar in the bloodstream) circulating in your body. Too much glucose in the blood indicates development of blood sugar problems such as diabetes mellitus. Its symptoms are thirst, frequent need to urinate due to excess glucose, problems with vision, fatigue and recurrent infections.

FACT #10 If your diet is poor this can compromise your immune system and make you more susceptible to colds, flu, and poor health. We need a steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and minerals to keep our immune systems working properly, to provide protection from infections and disease.

This recipe makes a pore cleansing mask which works just like the pore strips sold in popular drugstores.

Place gelatin powder in a small dish, and stir in warm milk until smooth. Apply the mixture on trouble areas of the skin. Avoid delicate eye area. Allow mixture to fully dry for 10-15 minutes. Hint: Add a few drops of essential oil (lemon, lemongrass, mint, jasmine or lavender) or fruit juice to add to the fragrance or experience.

When most of us think of important organs of our body, we don't usually think of our skin. The average adult has 22 square feet of skin (2 square meters) says National Geographic. With all that skin, you can see how this organ is so essential to the body.  Care for and protect your skin like your life depends on it, because it does!

Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that people who eat foods rich in vitamin C have less wrinkles and less age-related dry skin than those who don’t. Get Your Drink On!

“Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.” - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Drinking water is a crucial instrument in free weight loss aid. If you've been skimping on water intake, you’re missing out on an easy, very inexpensive and almost always accessible way to help jump start your weight loss regime, and keep you feeling healthy and alive.

To be completely honest, drinking water was something I have struggled with personally ~ not drinking enough water daily or not drinking enough of anything at all, period. The little cells that make up my body were trapped in a human Sahara desert and begging me to drink something! This is not good, no matter how busy we become…we must nourish our body.

Drinking enough water is vital for nourishment, feeling more energized, flushing toxins out of your system, weight loss, and even creating more youthful and clear skin! If you don’t drink enough water your body will react by bloating, and bloating not only looks bad, it’s uncomfortable. Said simply, there is no life without water.
